Orientation is a tradeoff, not a single right answer
The way a part sits on the build plate changes four things at once: how much support material it needs, how good the cosmetic surfaces look, how stable it is while printing, and which direction its layers run relative to the load it will actually carry. Rotating a part to fix one of these often makes another one worse. A cosmetic face that faces up prints clean but may need supports underneath; a face that touches the bed prints support-free but picks up bed texture and, on some printers, slight warping at the edges. This tool makes that tradeoff explicit instead of hiding it behind a single "best" orientation.
How the scoring works
Each orientation you describe gets a weighted risk score from its support burden, finish risk, and bed-contact stability, plus a penalty if its layers run against the part's load direction. The weighting changes based on the priority you select: minimizing supports weights that factor most heavily, while a strength priority weights load-direction alignment instead. The lower-scoring option is presented as the best fit, with the other option kept visible as a real alternative and a description of when it would actually be the better choice.
Worked example
A bracket with one cosmetic face and one significant overhang: laid flat with the cosmetic face up (support burden 0, finish risk 1, bed stability 3, load direction not aligned) versus stood on edge (support burden 2, finish risk 0, bed stability 1, load direction aligned). Under a balanced priority, the flat orientation usually wins on total score even though it sacrifices load-direction alignment; switching the priority to "strength" flips the recommendation toward standing the part on edge.
Limitations
This is a transparent weighted comparison of the two specific options you describe, using the numbers you assign them. It does not simulate your actual slicer's support generation, does not know your printer's real bed adhesion, and cannot evaluate a third orientation you did not enter. Use it to structure the comparison, then confirm the choice in your slicer's preview before printing.
