The best time to plan for finishing is before you finalize the model

Post-processing considerations are usually treated as an afterthought, something to figure out once the part is already printed. By then, an access problem, a missing drainage hole, or a fine detail sitting right where a drill needs to go is a much more expensive fix than it would have been at the design stage. This tool works through the considerations relevant to your specific planned process while the geometry is still editable.

How the check works

Every process gets a basic access check: can a hand or tool actually reach every surface it needs to reach. Beyond that, the specific process you select adds its own considerations, masking and finishing allowance for sanding and painting, fixturing for drilling and inserts, support-scar avoidance for adhesive bonding. An enclosed cavity adds a drainage consideration if liquid will be involved; fine detail near the process area adds a protection consideration, since fine features are the most common casualty of an otherwise successful post-processing step.

Worked example

Planned process is heat-set inserts, no enclosed cavity, fine detail exists near the process area: the tool flags access and fixturing (add a flat or gripping feature near the insert location so the part can be held securely) plus fine-detail protection (keep the process area clear of breakable detail, or plan to mask it explicitly during installation).

A common mistake

A frequent oversight is designing the part in isolation, then only thinking about how to hold it steady once the drill or insert tool is already in hand. Adding a small flat, a witness mark, or a dedicated fixturing tab costs almost nothing at the design stage but can save real frustration and part damage compared to improvising a way to clamp an awkwardly shaped part after the fact.
