Print order matters more than most people plan for

A queue of jobs with different deadlines and different material requirements does not schedule itself well by accident. Printing whichever job feels most urgent in the moment, or whichever is fastest, can quietly push a tight-deadline job past its due date while a flexible one gets done early. This planner applies a simple, well-established scheduling heuristic, earliest due date first, and shows you which jobs are actually at risk given your real durations and material-change overhead.

How the plan works

Jobs are ordered by due date, tightest first, and durations are summed cumulatively, adding your stated material-change overhead between jobs that require a filament swap. Any job whose cumulative finish time exceeds its own due date is flagged as at risk, so you see the problem before it becomes a missed deadline, not after.

Worked example

A customer bracket order (6h, due in 1 day), a prototype revision (4h, due in 3 days), and a personal project (10h, due in 7 days), 0.5h material-change overhead: sequenced by due date, the bracket order finishes at hour 6 (within its 24-hour window), the prototype at hour 10.5 (within its 72-hour window), and the personal project last, with the tool confirming all three fit comfortably at this pace.

A common mistake

A common scheduling error is sequencing jobs purely by which was requested first, rather than by actual due date. A job requested yesterday but due in two weeks does not need to jump the queue ahead of a job requested today but due tomorrow; first-come-first-served and earliest-due-date-first are different rules, and confusing them is a common way a tight deadline gets missed unnecessarily.

Limitations

This outputs a feasible sequence from the durations and due dates you enter, not a guaranteed delivery schedule. It does not account for a failed print, an unexpected material shortage, or other real-world disruption; revisit the schedule as circumstances change.
